Rough sleeping on a single night increased by 8% across the South West

Rough sleeping continues to increase across the South West

Yesterday, the government released its latest rough sleeper snapshot data, revealing that the South West still has the third highest number of people sleeping rough in England —following London and the South East. The region has seen an 8% increase since 2023.

Across England, the number of people sleeping rough is now 91% higher than it was three years ago and has more than doubled since data collection began in 2010.

The rough sleeper count, commissioned by the government and conducted by local agencies, including Julian House, took place on one night in November last year.

While this count does not reflect the full picture, it does offers crucial insight into trends in rough sleeping across England – and, sadly, in many places it is going up.

There is some positive news: some areas have seen a decline in numbers compared to last year, reflecting the relentless efforts of our outreach teams and other local partners to support vulnerable people to find safety off the streets.

Bath & North East Somerset, Exeter and Basingstoke all reported lower numbers of rough sleepers, whilst Dorset numbers remained static.

Our Assertive Outreach Teams in these areas are on the streets every day, ensuring that no one is left behind. They provide essential support, helping clients to understand their options and guiding them towards stable accommodation, food, addiction treatment, and mental health support.

However, homelessness extends far beyond the rough sleeping numbers published today. Many people are forced into unsafe, temporary accommodation or remain hidden from public view. Despite rising need, vital services for vulnerable people are under constant threat due to funding pressures.

With limited resources, our teams face immense challenges in maintaining the life-changing support that restores independence, security, and hope.
