A Safe Home is a Right, not a Privilege

Today, on Human Rights Awareness Day, we reflect on the words of UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Türk:

“The full promise of human rights is still to be fulfilled. The evidence is everywhere.”

This day reminds us that fundamental rights, like the right to safe housing, are essential entitlements. Article 25 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms the right to an adequate standard of living, including housing, food and medical care.

Yet, for many experiencing homelessness, these rights remain out of reach. Homelessness is not just a housing issue; it is a human rights crisis. As Volker Türk pointed out, the evidence is clear – too many people are still denied these basic rights.

At Julian House, we see this reality every day. We provide more than shelter: we offer a place where people can rebuild their lives with dignity.

Stephen*, who we’ve supported, shared his experience with the stigma faced by those who are homeless:

“A lot of people look at you and think you’re a drunkard or do anti-social behaviour… usually it’s not the case. People have the perception that if you’re homeless, you’re nasty, you’re thieves, we’re this, we’re that.”

Such harmful stereotypes strip individuals of their dignity, making it harder for them to access their rights. Homelessness robs people of more than just a home – it takes away their identity and voice.

Every day, Julian House works to ensure these fundamental human rights are upheld for those who need us most. Through your support, we provide vital services such as safe accommodation, emergency shelters, mental health support, and access to life-saving resources.

So, this Human Rights Awareness Day, stand with us in defending the rights and dignity of those we serve. Together, we can create a future where everyone has a safe place to call home and the support to rebuild their lives and reclaim their rights.

By donating to Julian House, you are directly supporting the fundamental human right to a safe home – because a safe home is a right, not a privilege.
