5 year old takes on 100 mile challenge to help the homeless

5-year-old Elizabeth Wood is making great gains in her mission to walk 100 miles in 2021 to raise money and awareness to help people experiencing homelessness.

Having started the challenge on 1st January, Elizabeth has already racked up 64 miles by walking most weekends with her mum, Eleanor, in their local area. She said: “I started the challenge because I was worrying about homeless people. I don’t like that some people have to sleep in doorways and I’m worried that they might get hurt or sick and have nowhere to stay safe.”

After initially being disappointed that her family could not give up their house or buy a new home for someone who didn’t have one, Elizabeth decided to raise money for a charity that helps people experiencing homelessness near her. She chose Julian House.

Speaking about her walk she added: “Some of the walks have been fun and they have been very muddy! My favorite walks are when we see animals and other interesting things. I’ve walked 64 miles now. I’m starting to wish that I hadn’t started the challenge because I don’t always go for a walk especially when it’s windy! But I will do the 100 miles because I want to help people!”

After setting herself a fundraising target of £200, Elizabeth has already smashed this to reach £670 and counting! She’s determined to continue and complete her challenge and added: “I like reading the messages people write on my fundraising page.”

Senior Community and Events Fundraiser at Julian House Jessica Gay said: “Elizabeth is a very inspirational and determined young girl. 100 miles is a really tough challenge, let alone for someone so young. She is doing incredibly well to keep going and upping those miles, especially during some of the terrible weather we have had this year. We’re sending a big good luck and well done to her as she completes the remainder miles! What a star!”
